When We Were Very Young by A.A. Milne

I loved this book of poems when I was a child and it is still one of my favorites today. The poem I asked to have read to me time and again was “Rice Pudding” about a little girl named Mary Jane who was having a tantrum (see her picture on the cover?). Don’t tell my sister, but I always thought the poem was about her!

The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds

The Dot encourages readers to bravely express themselves through art and creativity. I love to paint but never thought I was very good. This book teaches that it’s okay to just “make a mark and see where it takes you.” It also recognizes those teachers who see the possibilities in all of their students and allow those students to shine.

Lubna and Pebble by Wendy Meddour

Lubna arrives at the World of Tents as a refugee and finds a pebble that brings her comfort. Pebble is her best friend. Pebble always listens to her stories. Pebble always smiles when Lubna feels scared. But when a lost little boy arrives in the World of Tents, Lubna realizes that he needs Pebble even more than she does. This books pulls on my heart strings each and every time I read it because it shows the resilience and humanity of children.

The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires

This book celebrates creativity, ingenuity, drive, and perseverance. A little girl has an idea to create “the most magnificent thing” but it’s not as easy as she hopes. After many failures and a lot of frustration, she finally gets it right. This book is for those of you who have lots of ideas and are willing to do what it takes to realize them.
